#30DaysWild – Day 29 – A Common Spotted Orchid

While driving home from the supermarket, I took a exploratory turn up a small country lane. To my delight, it lead to the most beautiful wild spot I had never seen before! I couldn’t stay too long, so I will go back, I definitely need to investigate this hidden gem.

In the short time I was there, I was very happy to find a small patch of Common Spotted Orchids! Absolutely beautiful flowers!

#30DaysWild – Day 4 – Wildflower hunt

Today I went for a walk around my local area. I was on the hunt for as many different species of wildflower as I could find, photographing as I went. It was a most relaxing and pleasant way to spend an afternoon!

#30DaysWild – highlights from 2019

Here are my highlights from #30DaysWild 2019. Moving house, while working full time and joining in with 30 Days Wild wasn’t easy, but it was very worth it!

One of the best things I have done all month is putting up the bird feeder in my new home. It didn’t take long for the birds to find it! I now have regular visits from Blue Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Robins, Blackbirds, Sparrows. I also have Collared Doves and Wood Pigeons hovering up the dropped crumbs. Winding down from a day at work, I now find myself sitting with my cuppa and watching my new feathered friends!

#30DaysWild – Day 19 – Life (and death) among the buttercups

While wandering through a meadow I spotted a cluster of buttercups. I stopped to take a closer look and found a microcosm of life among the petals, with each flower having its own story to tell.

National Meadows Day

In honour of National Meadows Day, I visited my favourite meadow at golden hour. It is beautiful place anytime of the day, but the light this evening made the wild flowers shine!

#30DaysWild – Day 14 – Grass ID

So I have to say that knowing my grass species is not one of my strengths! I thought that today I would have a bit of a practice. I wandered round my local patch and picked a sample of every species I passed. I collected 9 species, and when I got home, I dug out my grass IDs to figure out what I had found.

Bit of challenge but I hope I’ve done OK!

#30DaysWilds – Day 13 – Tiny frogs and colourful close-ups

Today I thought I’d take a closer look at some of nature’s beauty. All that detail and colour. My only challenge was photographing it in the wind!

Best moment was when a small movement on the surface of some damp ground grabbed my attention. I thought it was a beetle, then I saw some more movement. I inspected the area more closely and saw that the tiny creatures were juvenile frogs! They shone like gems in the sunlight! Utterly delightful!

#30DaysWild – Day 8 – I found a Bee Orchid!

I found a flowering Bee Orchid in my local patch! I am thrilled! I have only ever seen them in photos so I’m over the moon to find one. Isn’t it a stunning flower!

Now I’ve home, I’ve pulled open May’s BBC Wildlife magazine to read the article on Orchids. I will enjoy finding out more about these beautiful plants.
