My photograph of the month for August

With the beautiful sunny weather of August and a new camera to play with, I had a lot of fun with photography this month. My only problem was when I came to do this blog, I had a lot of photos to chose from. In the end I settled on this photo.

I was photographing the Banded Demoiselles along the canal when this little beauty positioned itself perfectly on a stem of grass. Underneath, almost hidden, a patient spider waited. The demoiselle was only there for a moment and then off it flew, dancing in the gentle summer’s breeze.

#30DaysWild – Day 13 – Seeking shelter

I am so glad the weather eased today, even if it was only a little! I got to encourage my small housemates back outside, and also take a stroll.

There was still intermittent drizzle, but it was a tiny bit warmer. So either warmth or desperation brought out a few bugs. I found a sawfly, bee and beetles hiding from the rain on leaves and flowers. I also found a clever little spider which had created itself a tent, spinning together the petals of a daisy over its head.

I am impressed with how wildlife seeks shelter, I only hope they don’t need it for too much longer.

#30DaysWild – Day 12 – Watched a spider spin its web!

I stepped out at golden hour to find my wild moment, a little late in the day but you never know what you might see.

As the rich sunlight shone across a lovely meadow, a spider caught my eye. Moving back and forth with careful precision I realised it was spinning its web. I stayed and watched as the sun got lower in the sky and the strands of silk went from gold to silver. It looked like hard work for the little arachnid, but the end result was beautiful to see!

#30DaysWild – Day 3 – A trip to the supermarket!

I wasn’t feeling very adventurous today, but I did need to get some supplies. A trip to the supermarket was in order and maybe I’ll find somewhere green to visit along the way.

Parking up I noticed a magpie and a jay perched up in the trees surrounding the car park. As I got out the car I saw two jackdaws were on the ground nearby searching for scraps.

Walking to the shop, I passed a flowering bush covered with bees. Pausing to admire the busy little pollinators, I heard the iconic ‘witter-wit, witter-wit’ of a goldfinch high up on the tree next to me. That made me smile, I had found the ‘wild’ on a routine visit to the supermarket!

But the wild didn’t stop there! On leaving the shop I saw house sparrows, a pied wagtail, tiny ants toing-and-froing across the pavement, a speedy little wolf spider making a dash across my path, a brightly coloured hoverfly visiting some rogue daisies and most surprising of all, a bee fly!

I never imagined that a simple trip to the supermarket would turn into such a wildlife safari!

My 2015

My 2015 was a good year, it was also a very busy one!

Choosing a photograph per month to blog was both enjoyable and a challenge. It’s something I’ll be carrying through into 2016.

There were many other photographs that I loved to, so here are a few highlights .

My Photograph from October

This month’s photograph was taken early on in October.

I took a late evening walk around the local nature reserve. The mist was rising in the cool evening light and the spiders webs began is glisten with the crystal-drops of water caught on the fine strands of silk, stretched between high stems of Meadow sweet.

For one reason or another I haven’t had the opportunity to blog much this year. I still made sure that I seized every opportunity to photograph wildlife in all its beauty and glory!

I decided to have a look over my photos from 2014 today, I was reminded of some of the most incredible animals I had witnessed over the last 12 months. I thought I would put together a blog, which quickly became the 2 blogs that I am posting today and tomorrow!

Part 1 – Butterflies & Moth, and other Bugs!

Part 2 – Birds and Mammals

I’ve chosen 12 of my photographs of butterflies & moths from 2014, one for each month of the year!
