#30DaysWild – Day 24 – Bug hunting

With it being the last day of National Insect Week, today I went on a bug hunt!

Taking a stroll around farmer’s field, I saw an amazing array of insects. A wonderfully relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

#30DaysWild – Day 19 – National Insect Week, Beetles

Continuing an insect theme for National Insect Week, I went on a bug hunt today. I examined the long grass, inspected bramble bushes and peered into hedgerows that line the farmer’s fields where I walked.

My search was not in vain! I was lucky enough to find 2 longhorn beetles in less than a square foot. I found a few other stunning beetle species along the way.

Such a broad spectrum of colours, sizes and shapes, I never tire of admiring beetles. There’s no such thing as “just a beetle”!

#30DaysWild – Day 16 – Bradgate Park, Leicester

This weekend was Bradgate Park’s Wildlife Weekend, I attended last year and had a fantastic time so I thought I would pop by again this year.

The event was bigger than last year, with more stalls and more local groups wanting to share their passion with anyone who showed interest. It was really rather fun and fascinating. I now have a lot of literature to read through too!

I did need a warm up before heading back, so I stopped for a cuppa. I had forgotten my travel mug so I was happy to see that the disposable cup I was given is 100% compostable, I may even use it to grow some micro-greens!

Taking a long walk back to the car park, I took the time to enjoy the beautiful open landscape and the resident wildlife. Seeing the deer that inhabit the park is always a thrill!

#30DaysWild – Day 15 – Beetles and bikes

Today I went to watch the Women’s Tour of Britiain. You might be wondering what a cycle race has to do with 30 Days Wild, well I decided it was worth the 15 mile cycle through the countryside to see the race pass through my local area.

Not only was it a glorious day to have a cycle anywhere, but the journey was beautiful. There was so many species of birds flying by and singing.

On my way home I stopped for a snack and paused at a lay-by. Sitting on a log I watched bees, beetles and butterflies visiting the flowers that lined the colourful verge. My snack finished, I went to get up, but before I could I felt a sharp pain on my behind. It made me stand up VERY quickly! Looking back I saw a large black ground beetle that had not been there when I had sat down. It quickly scurried back into its wooden crevice in the log. It was then I realised that I had been bitten on the bottom by a beetle! There’s a first time for everything!

It might have been a long ride, but it was worth it. I feel inspired enough to take that ride again!

My photograph of the month for May and June

Here are my photos for May and June. It’s a little late but June has been quite a busy month for many reasons!

May

On a short walk round my local patch, I found this lovely looking beetle resting on a fence. I was quite taken with it so it had to be my photo for May!

June

Some of you who have followed my 30 Days Wild will have already seen this photo but you have to admit it was a rather lovely sight to see. A cygnet resting on its mother’s back!

Day 10 – Starlings

A blustery day at work ended with a few magical moments watching a small group of Starlings, all foraging in a windswept patch of grass.

Day 11 – Beetles, bees & blooms

Today I took the opportunity to appreciated beetles and bees revel in the nectar and pollen provided by beautiful wildflowers.

#30DaysWild day 7 & 8 – a days rest and a day with bugs!

Day 7
I was feeling under the weather, so going outside was a bad plan. My day 7 was spent under the duvet with Springwatch Live running in the back ground of my snoozing.

Day 8
Despite the inclement weather, I’ve managed to have quite a wild day.

I have found some bugs in some unlikely places! A Woodlouse making it home on my friends desk, a Lesser Stag Beetle in the kitchen and finally a White Ermine in the toilets at work!

The bugs got returned to the green outdoors. I managed to film the Lesser Stag Beetle take her first steps in her new home.

I also made a trip down to the nature reserve at work again, I watched a Buzzard being mobbed by 3 Jackdaws. I spotted my first Speckledwood of the year and had the brief opportunity to admire a view of a female Scorpionfly.

#30DaysWild day 4 – Green leaves and a red beetle

Stood in a little woody patch at work today, I found myself looking at the species of trees around me. The more I looked the more I saw, what on the surface looked like mainly scots pine and dogwood, had 11 different species!

While looking at all those green leaves, a little splash of red caught my eye. A Red-Headed Cardinal Beetle was crawling round the under growth before spreading its wings to find new ground.

My Big Butterfly Count 2016

I take part in the Big Butterfly Count every year. It’s great fun to do and I would encourage anyone to do it!

Though I’ve now been in the Market Bosworth area for a year now, this is the first opportunity do the Big Count here.

As always, I enjoyed my count. The chosen place was my local patch, it is so full of life! In the 15 minutes of doing the survey, not only did I see 9 different species of butterfly, but I also saw Dragonflies, Damselflies, Bees, Snails, Birds and, Black and Yellow Longhorn beetle. I even had a frog jump over my foot!

If you want to take part, you can find out more at The Big Butterfly Count website here.

Day 23 #30DaysWild

Today I came across this excellently camouflaged little beetle – a Green Tortoise Beetle. I think it’s amazing!

Continuing on the beetle theme, I rescued this Lesser Stag Beetle from the middle of a busy path, returning it a rotten log.
