#30DaysWild – Day 23 – Butterfly walk

On my search for beetles on Tuesday, I was stopped on 2 separate occasions by dog walkers asking me what I was looking for. I explained how I hoped to find a few beetle species for both 30 Days Wild and National Insect Week. Each time the people in question were fascinated and we talked for quite a while about the plight of insects and also local wildlife hot spots.

Today I decided to investigate one of those tips and was very pleasantly surprised!
I wanted to find some butterflies, I wasn’t sure that I would find many species as there quite a breeze. Clearly the day’s warmth was enough to entice them out.

On my walk to, around and home from the place I was recommended, I saw 9 species of butterfly! Small Tortoiseshell, Small Skipper, Speckled Wood, Ringlet, Small White, Large White, Meadow Brown, Peacock and Red Admiral. I was well chuffed!

Next time I see those dog walkers, I shall thank them for the tip!

#30DaysWild day 21 – a beautiful butterfly

After a full day in the office, I escaped outside to enjoy the nature reserve at work. I was greeted with a real treat, a Marbled White. Not only is it the first time I’ve seen one there, but when I checked the records I found it was our first recorded sighting of this beautiful species!

#30DaysWild day 17, 18, 19 and 20

After a few busy days, I’m playing catch up with my 30 Days Wild blog.

Day 17 – Bradgate Park, Wildlife Weekend

I knew Saturday was going to be a good ‘wild’ day when I heard my first cuckoo of the year right at the very beginning.

I managed to get myself to Bradgate Park again. This time to help out on the stand for my local bat group who were attending the park’s Wild Weekend. There were lots of other wildlife organisations there and I enjoyed having a little nosey at their stands too.

The last few hours of the day I spent walking through the park and despite the blistering heat, the wildlife was really active in the summer sun.

Day 18 – A little Leafcutter Bee

While being given a lift I had an encounter with a lovely little Leafcutter Bee. It came through the window as the car was moving at a little speed. It landed in my lap stunned, so I held it in my hands for a few minutes as it gained its bearings. As we slowed for a junction the wee mite found its wings and was back out through the open window into the world!

Day 19 – Moths

Today I found some rather beautiful moths in places you wouldn’t normally look!

Day 20 – A country drive

While driving through the countryside my friend and I stopped to enjoy the grand oaks that lined the narrow lanes. The gentle breeze was a cool welcome sensation on the skin. A simple moment of peace and serenity.

#30DaysWild day 7 & 8 – a days rest and a day with bugs!

Day 7
I was feeling under the weather, so going outside was a bad plan. My day 7 was spent under the duvet with Springwatch Live running in the back ground of my snoozing.

Day 8
Despite the inclement weather, I’ve managed to have quite a wild day.

I have found some bugs in some unlikely places! A Woodlouse making it home on my friends desk, a Lesser Stag Beetle in the kitchen and finally a White Ermine in the toilets at work!

The bugs got returned to the green outdoors. I managed to film the Lesser Stag Beetle take her first steps in her new home.

I also made a trip down to the nature reserve at work again, I watched a Buzzard being mobbed by 3 Jackdaws. I spotted my first Speckledwood of the year and had the brief opportunity to admire a view of a female Scorpionfly.

My photograph from October!

In early October I was very happy to see one of my favourite species of butterfly out and about, the Small Copper.

I found this little beauty enjoying some flowers in my friend’s garden.

My Big Butterfly Count 2016

I take part in the Big Butterfly Count every year. It’s great fun to do and I would encourage anyone to do it!

Though I’ve now been in the Market Bosworth area for a year now, this is the first opportunity do the Big Count here.

As always, I enjoyed my count. The chosen place was my local patch, it is so full of life! In the 15 minutes of doing the survey, not only did I see 9 different species of butterfly, but I also saw Dragonflies, Damselflies, Bees, Snails, Birds and, Black and Yellow Longhorn beetle. I even had a frog jump over my foot!

If you want to take part, you can find out more at The Big Butterfly Count website here.

Day 27 #30DaysWild

Yesterday I was thinking I hadn’t seen many butterflies this year at all, that changed today! On a walk around my local wild patch, I passed by a area of bramble and the flowers were not only attracting lots of bees but also several species of Butterfly! I even spotted my first Dragonfly and Froglet of the year too!

I also managed to finish my butterfly painting I started yesterday! I’m no Monet, but I did enjoy creating it!

Day 26 #30DaysWild

Last day in National Insect Week, so I marked the occasion by watching a Natural World (from 2011) called “Butterflies: A Very British Obsession”. Though a few years old, it was wonderful and eccentrically British!

Day 26

Headed out to the shops but was delayed as when I stepped outside I came across this stunning female Ghost Moth! I was really rather taken with this beauty!

Continuing the Lepidoptera theme, I decided to get a little arty and paint a picture of butterfly! I haven’t finished it yet so I shall share a photo of it tomorrow.

Day 15
With the weather being so cold and wet today, I curled up on the sofa with the latest copy of BBC Wildlife magazine in front of the Springwatch live cameras on TV.
